I firmly believe that design is an integral part of any project. The best designs will evoke emotion, without the beholder even realizing why. My passion for design stems from a long love of creating and appreciating art.  Each of the projects below not only enhanced my design expertise, but also presented challenges that required innovative solutions.

I am fascinated by the interior design and layout process. As a designer, the challenge is to capture the essence of a manuscript without interfering with the reading experience. I believe that while capturing that essence, it is also important to, as Robert Bringhurst put it, “By all means break the rules, and break them beautifully, deliberately and well.”

I designed in interior layouts for all of the projects below. Permanent Vacation, Volume 2 and An Autobiography of a Kibei-Nisei are the exception, as I designed the entire book including front and back cover.

Permanent Vacation Volume II, published by Bona Fide Books in 2018.

Autobiography of a Kibei-Nisei by Shozo Takahashi, originally self-published in 1992 and republished in 2023.

Course text and manual for the Sierra Avalanche Center, self published in 2018.

The Ocean in my Ears by Meagan Macvie, published by Ooligan Press in 2017.

Magazine article layout project for design course at Portland State University, 2016.
